What is porridge?

Porridge is a typical English breakfast, however it is being consumed in more and more parts of the world. It is a great source of energy to start the day. Thanks to its fiber content, it helps regulate appetite, keeping you satiated all morning long. 

Nutritional value of oats

Oats are whole grain cereals. They contain complex carbohydrates, fiber and between 11 to 15% of protein (more than most cereals). Also, they are high in some minerals such as magnesium, copper, iron, zinc; and vitamins like folate, thiamine (vitamin B1) and vitamin B5.

Apple and cinnamon porridge recipe

Ingredients (for 1 person):

  • 30.0g oats 
  • 200.0g milk (or any plant-based milk of your choice)
  • 110.0g apple 
  • 1.0g cinnamon

 

Instructions:

In a bowl, mix the oat flakes with the chosen liquid and the cinnamon. Store it in the refrigerator with plastic wrap and let stand overnight. The oats will soak up some of the liquid.

The next morning, add a chopped apple. If the consistency of the porridge has become too thick, you can add a splash of milk. At this point, it is ready to consume if you want to eat it cold. If preferred, heat it for 1-2 minutes in the microwave.

The amounts of oats and liquid can be modified to achieve the desired consistency. The liquid ingredient can be also replaced by water.

Porridge works perfectly with different fruits, try it with banana, berries, kiwi or whatever fruit you prefer. Seeds and nuts will add some crunch, as well as good fats and protein. Adding them to the porridge will help reduce hunger throughout the morning.

Also, you can add different ingredients as toppings. For example, yogurt, kéfir, raw cocoa, pieces of chocolate, peanut butter, etc. The combinations are endless.
